Our Story

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. It was formed when two individual affiliates, Habitat for Humanity - Los Angeles and Habitat for Humanity South Bay/Long Beach joined forces in July 2005.  Since 1990, the combined affiliates have built a total of more than 180 homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has received the following accolades:

  •  Partnership Achievement Award – city of Long Beach

  •  Outstanding Nonprofit – Long Beach Chamber of Commerce

  •  Clarence Jordan Award for Creativity and Innovation – 2000, 2001

The Greater Los Angeles region has hosted several high-profile events over the years including:  

  • Jimmy Carter Work Project - In June of 1995, President and Mrs. Carter built alongside over 2,500 volunteers to build 21 houses in six days in Watts . Our affiliate was designated as the location of the 100th Habitat for Humanity house built in California in 1995 in connection with the build.

  •  Church of the Brethren Blitz Build 1997 – HFH GLA hosted the annual Church of the Brethren Blitz Build which is held in conjunction with the church’s national conference. When the church met in Long Beach in 1997 we hosted a week-long blitz build for their 1,000 participants.

  • WB/ Teen People/Polaroid Build Day 2000 – HFH joined forces with WB Television Network, Polaroid and Teen People in a cause-related marketing partnership in which Teen People readers entered a contest to win a trip to Los Angeles to build with WB Television stars such as Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, and Stephen Collins (“7th Heaven”). Polaroid sponsored the house with their marketing promotion of the i-Zone Camera. The accelerated build event lasted one weekend.

  • "Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity ” 2000 - 2005 HFH GLA produces this annual event which draws thousands of volunteers and many top celebrities to help blitz- build homes in Los Angeles .  Actors, writers, producers, directors, musicians and studio executives are among the volunteers who have worked side by side including:  Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Bo Derek, Michael Badalucco, Thora Birch, Patricia and David Arquette, Maria Shriver, and Former U.S. HUD Secretary Jack Kemp and sponsoring companies MGM/UA, House & Garden Magazine, OurHouse.com, Warner Bros. Studios, Showtime, The Wheelhouse, Shady Acres Entertainment Company, Sony, Turner Adams, William Morris Agency, Toyota, SCE, Charter Communications, Union Bank.

  • Financial Services Roundtable Community Build Day 2003 - Seven financial institutions—including Assurant Group, Beneficial, Citibank, Household Finance Corporation, State Farm, Washington Mutual and Wells Fargo brought together their CEO’s and employees in this press conference/build day which kicked off their national partnership with Habitat for Humanity .  The press conference included CEO’s from each of the corporations, as well as elected officials. More than 100 employees participated in the build day.

  •  Amgen Corporate & Directors Build Day 2004 & 2005 - Amgen CEO Kevin Sharer ties in an onsite team building event with their national conference for Amgen’s top 400 Amgen executives from all over the world.

  • Merrill Lynch Partnership Kick-off Event 2001 HFH GLA was chosen as the Site to kick off a $1 million national partnership with Merrill Lynch. Merrill Lynch employees built 10 homes nationwide.
